Description

Elephant Trunk Nebula
Constellation: Cepheus

A pillar of interstellar gas and dust that lies within a much larger region of hydrogen located about 2,400 light-years from Earth.  The dark globule is considered a star forming region, housing many young stars and proto-stars that are obscured by the thick dust and gas, only visible in infrared images.  The cavity at the top of the "trunk" is created by the stellar wind of two older stars (but still young stars on the astronomical scale), which blew away material to create the cavity.
